Tea Tree Oil
Renowned for its healing properties, the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia - or tea tree - were originally infused to make tea, hence its name. Native to the north east coast of New South Wales, Australia, the tea tree has long been known for its medicinal benefits and the crushed leaves were traditionally used in Aboriginal medicine to heal infections, cuts and burns. They also inhaled the oil from crushed tea tree leaves to relieve sore throats, coughs and colds.
The steam-distilled tea tree essential oil is believed to have antiseptic, antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties thanks to compounds called terpenoids and is widely used in personal care and medicinal products today. Tea tree essential oil is also used to relieve congestion, help to heal acne, dandruff and fungal infections, as well as helping to soothe aching muscles and joints.
For a skin and muscle-soothing bath, simply add a few drops in your bath water.
Eucalyptus Oil
A native plant of Australia, the familiar and heady aroma of eucalyptus oil is believed to not only be antibacterial but to also work as an effective disinfectant and analgesic. Distilled, expressed or solvent extracted from the Eucalyptus tree, its concentrated oil has a stimulating aroma that both uplifts and heals. Inhaled, eucalyptus oil can help to relieve coughs, colds and chest congestion. Diluted, the oil can be used on the skin to help heal wounds, burns and insect bites and is also known to soothe muscle and joint pains. Used in aromatherapy, the uplifting aroma of eucalyptus oil can also boost vitality and energy.
For a revitalizing soak, just add a couple of drops to your bath water to feel refreshed and invigorated.
Sandalwood Oil
Distilled from the heart of the sandalwood tree, sandalwood essential oil has a rich, sweet and woody aroma with subtle smoky undertones that have a powerful relaxing effect, helping to alleviate anxiety and stress as well as aid a good night’s sleep.
Highly prized in skin care for its anti-aging properties, Sandalwood not only adds a relaxing aroma, it can also help to heal scars and blemishes, soothe irritated skin and moisturise dry skin. Its gentle astringent and effective antiseptic qualities can also help to balance oily skin and reduce acne.
A versatile essential oil when it comes to healing, sandalwood has traditionally been used for urinary infections and digestive troubles and its anti-spasmodic properties can bring welcome relief to dry, tickly coughs. And, as an ancient treatment, sandalwood oil has also long been used as an aid to meditation and is believed to boost focus and mental clarity.
